Hi Alan - great question. The answer is: it all depends on the deal made for distribution. I know that in practice the filmmaker might not see any money from the distribution proceeds. According to one source I spoke with, the filmmakers on "What the Bleep" ... haven't seen a bleeping dime. On the other hand, the filmmakers on "The Secret" have enriched themselves personally quite a bit. The investors and distributors who put up the money are in line to be paid back first. But if the filmmaker maintains an ownership position in the film they can get in line, hopefully not too far back in the queue, and realize some of the distribution profits. Thanks for commenting!

Hi Lee - Great post. It seems like honesty is becoming the dominant cultural trait under Obama... the way that lies and deception were dominant under BushCheney.

One question... How much of a film's box-office gross stays with the theater and distributor, and how much comes back to the filmmaker?

Great insight and excellent advice. Fundraising has always been such a dirty word to me, and now it's actually covered in mud. Thanks for the tips (and happy holidays!).
