Interesting and well-articulated piece as usual, Lee. Many of the arts have seen this trend. I think about the theater scene - unless it's a broadway smash, theatrical productions have long been obsolete as profitable business ventures. So they rely heavily on grants, sponsors, and private donors. Still, a handful of quality theater gets put up every year amidst the many amateur flops and artless showcases. Where there is a will, there will always be a way.

Hi Lee,

I think you have something here. Film/video is the most powerful medium ever conceived (it used to be great books--but then more than 1% of the population would have to read them). I watch and listen to many youtube broadcasts--not a tough choice when there's nothing intelligent on the 70 cable channels one pays for.

I have a suggestion: a video on the philosophy of Diogenes, done in a satirical Tarantino style. It would upset people's materialistic applecart and show them how stupid social climbing is--a tremendous waste of tiime and energy. A terrible thing to focus one's life on when so many in this world just need food to eat and a roof over their heads.

One of my favorite anecdotes of all time: Alexander the Great, the most powerful man of his time, decides to visit Diogenes--a man who lived his philosophy:

Diogenes, essentially homeless, sitting in his tub in Athens, eating an orange; Alexander stands in front of him, holds his arms wide and says "Is there anything I can do for you?"

Diogenes looks up at him, motions with his hand, and says: "Yes--you can step out of the sunlight."

Later Alexander remarks to his generals: "If I was not Alexander, I would wish to be Diogenes."

No doubt apocryphal, illustrating the character of both men.
